Description

As an important country in the south Asian region, Pakistan’s engagement with international institutions is wide-ranging and comprehensive. Within the context of health, Pakistan has been involved in several key initiatives which are at various stages of implementation. Some of the key agreements are listed below:

  • Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030)
  • International Health Regulations (2005) / Global Health Security (IHR/GHSA)
  • Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC, 2004-ongoing)
  • Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (2008)
  • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW, 1996)
  • International Health Partnership for UHC 2030 (ongoing)
  • Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (for maternal and child health, 1995)

The impetus lent by these agreements, some of which are legally binding under international law, provide the push for accelerating implementation in these key areas. It should also be noted that many of these international agreements are modified, enhanced and subjected to further development as implementation on them proceeds. Success in these areas will bring Pakistan in line with the socio-legal requirements expected from an influential nation-state of our status.
